Government Attacks on Rural Communities

The postmasters and postmistresses of Ireland are to be commended for providing wonderful service as the social and economic hub for rural communities. The proposed closure of 159 post offices will devastate towns and villages. However, Government is not listening to those communities who are prepared to come up with their own solutions to keep these vital centres open.

Fianna Fáil closed 732 post offices when last in government. They cite population as the reason, but the population in the countryside had grown 30% over the previous two decades. The attack on Rural Ireland continues with the current Fine Gael government.

I don’t accept that it is about allocation of resources. It’s about choices that this and the last government have made which have favoured banks and vulture funds while turning their backs on our citizens.
