People who depend on their car either to travel to work or indeed to carry out their business are faced with huge insurance hikes which are unpredictable and unfair on any business or family already dealing with uncertainty surrounding their finances.
The very measure that the Government said would address these massive hikes, their ‘taskforce’, hasn’t even begun to look at the underlying causes of these increases. Instead they have merely focused on the case of Setanta insurance.
I have been contacted by several constituents in Mayo recently, who have told me of attempts to bring the creeping rise in premiums in recent years to the attention of government TDs here in Mayo. Time and time again they were told that this is a matter for the Central Bank and that they should correspond directly with them.
I am calling on Michael Ring and Taoiseach Enda Kenny to show leadership and deliver some relief for the people of Mayo who have seen a 34% increase in premiums this year and are fearful that this upward trend will continue
I welcome the fact that Fianna Fáil accepted a Sinn Féin amendment to their motion in the Dáil. The Sinn Féin amendment means the Finance Committee will immediately start examining the reasons behind the massive hikes.
Sinn Féin is planning a weekend of demonstrations and public meetings surrounding the insurance hikes.
