The conundrum: Rural areas lose funding for vital services because of depopulation BUT population increases are less likely because of the lack of services.
In this case, the preschool in Ballycroy, Co. Mayo is potentially facing closure if funding is based solely on population size. I am encouraged by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs’ remarks that other measurements for funding may be an opportunity to make this very important rural early learning centre viable into the future.
