Concessions that Minister Simon Coveney is seeking from private waste companies cannot provide a long term solution to the problem of increased bin charges.
We can all agree that the Statutory Instrument introduced by former Minister Alan Kelly has failed. Instead of keeping prices to a minimum it has actually led to significantly increased charges for the vast majority of people.
The simple solution to this is to have the Statutory Instrument annulled and that is what Sinn Féin’s motion in the Seanad will do if it is supported by a majority of Senators tomorrow.
The concessions that Minister Coveney is seeking from the private waste companies cannot provide a long term solution to this problem. His plan is to simply kick the can down the road.
The Statutory Instrument should be annulled and all parties should get around the table again to find a solution that is both environmentally friendly and that ensures that the public cannot be fleeced by private bin companies.
I am urging Senators from all parties and none to support the Sinn Féin motion when we push it to a vote tomorrow.
