Tuam Forensic Investigation Welcome

Senator Rose Conway-Walsh speaking after the announcement by Minister Zappone that a forensic excavation of the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home will take place.

I welcome the decision to carry out a forensic excavation of the site of the former Mother and Baby Home.  I am very mindful of the families that have endured deep wounds as a result of the horrors inflicted on them from the Tuam Mother and Baby Home and from similar homes throughout the country.  I am conscious that these wounds are very much open and exposed at this sensitive time.  That is why the site needs to excavated in a respectful and time sensitive way where there is ongoing and clear communication with the families.

Catherine Corless has shown what leadership with compassion, courage and tenacity can achieve.  She is a truly remarkable human being. Those who dismissed her should reflect on their attempts to silence her and publicly apologise.

I believe the Vatican and the Catholic Church should liquidate some of their enormous assets and show genuine remorse for the significant part it played in the suffering inflicted in these homes.

The truth and the scale of the abuse must be exposed and the mothers and babies given the recognition denied to them when they were alive. The government should extend the process to other sites.
