It is time that we cared for the carers.
Our health system depends on the 355,000 unpaid family carers. Only 5% of them receive the carer’s allowance because the means test is unchanged since 2008.
Carers save the State an estimated €10 billion annually, according to the Family Carers Ireland Pre-budget Submission. However, there are serious problems in how these vital people are supported by the State. The reasonable programme requests outlined in their report must be heeded.
